Chennai, Aug 09: A few boxes of cash that were being transported by the Reserve Bank of India has reportedly gone missing from one of the parcel vans in which it was brought from Salem to Chennai on Tuesday.

Preliminary investigations said the parcel vans contained 220 boxes and a few of them were noticed missing after the train reached the parcel siding lines at Chennai Egmore railway station.

Railway police agencies do not have any information about the missing cash. They, however, said that the consignment belonged to soiled notes being returned by different banks to RBI Chennai office and were meant to be destroyed.

The point of entry was found to be a hole made at the roof of the coach. Since it was a cargo train, the jurisdiction lay with the RPF and the case was being registered by them, the officials said.

RBI sources said the robbers opened the boxes through the hole and escaped with the currencies. The exact loss was yet to be ascertained, they added. However, they estimated that the losses were to the tune of Rs 4 – 8 crore

The GRP is co-ordinating with them in the investigation
