Jaipur, Sep 3: In a most shocking case of public apathy, a 30-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Jaipur on Thursday midnight. It was reported that the crushed body was on the road for over half-an-hour and vehicles passed over it, leaving it in pieces. When the police reached the site, they found that the body was mutilated as it was hit by one or two other vehicles. The body parts were crushed and scattered on the accident site.

After examining the body, officials said that the man must have been lying there for a long time, before someone informed the control room. It was reported that few street lights near the site of the accident and the CCTV cameras nearby don’t have night vision facility installed in them. It was reported that before the body was taken to the hospital, the policemen had to pick up the scattered body parts. Efforts to identify the deceased have been going on.

In a similar incident, a man bled to death on a Delhi road after being hit by a vehicle as people continued to pass by without getting help from anyone.  “We had received information from the control room about the body of a man lying on the road near the Polo Victory cinema hall. The body is that of a man around 30 years of age and from his attire it seems that he was a beggar and lived on the streets”, Rajendra Singh, SHO, accident police station (west) was quoted by Hindustan Times.

In another similar famous hit and run case, Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser had crashed into men sleeping on a pavement outside a bakery in Mumbai’s Bandra, killing one and injuring four people on September 28, 2002. Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi, for the State, said alcohol content in blood samples taken from Khan even after 12 hours from the incident registered double the permissible limits

Khan, who was acquitted of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case, withdrew his petition seeking singer Kamal Khan’s examination as a witness in the case. Rohatgi also stated that besides Salman Khan, his singer friend Kamaal Khan and a constable was inside the vehicle and there are statements which amply suggested that the actor was driving.

Salman filed an appeal in the High Court which granted him bail before hearing arguments in the case. The Maharashtra government decided to file an appeal in Supreme Court challenging Salman Khan’s acquittal in 2002 hit and run case. Salman Khan was, however, acquitted of all charges by Bombay High Court in the 2002 hit-and-run case on 10 December.
